Voices: pick one, regenerate, or connect your ElevenLabs account
Every video speaks in the avatar's voice. Design one from a description, regenerate a preview, change it later, or bring your own ElevenLabs voice.
Where voices live
An avatar gets its voice in one of three places:
- The avatar wizard, Voice step, when you create an avatar.
- The import wizard, Voice step, when you bring your own face.
- The avatar page, through Edit voice, any time later.
If you try to make a video with an avatar that has no voice, the app stops on a page that says the avatar needs a voice. Click Generate Voice and you land on the Voice step; it takes about 30 seconds.
The voice you pick here is the one that speaks every script. For how the voice reaches the video, that page shows the finished result.
Design a voice from a description
- Start with the Voice description. It drafts itself from the face, story and references; click Suggest with AI if it is empty, or Regenerate prompt for another draft. It needs at least 10 characters.
- Make it specific. The tips popover lists what matters: gender, origin (“Emirati from Dubai” beats “Middle Eastern”), accent, pacing, pitch, timbre (pick two or three words like warm, gravelly, smooth), and emotion or persona.
- Optional: Advanced · tuning & preview text has Loudness, Guidance, and a box for a custom line the previews will say (up to 200 characters).
- Click Generate 3 voice previews. One credit for the batch of three.
- Press play on Voice 1, Voice 2 and Voice 3. Click Use this voice on the one that sounds like a real person without trying. It reads ✓ Picked.
- Click Finish avatar → (or Save avatar → in the import wizard).
Voice carries a lot of the realism. If none of the three convince you, do not settle: regenerate.
Regenerate a preview
- One tile. Under the preview, type what should change (“warmer, slower, less announcer”) and click Regenerate. A third of a credit.
- A fresh batch. Click Generate 3 more. One credit. The new three replace the grid, so pick before you regenerate if one was close.
If you see “Pick one of the three voices first.”, play the previews, click Use this voice on one, then try that action again.
Change the voice later
- Open the avatar from Avatars and click Edit voice.
- The Voice step opens with your current voice sample at the top.
- Generate new previews and click Use this voice on one, or switch to your ElevenLabs list.
- Click Finish avatar → to save the change.
Use a voice from your ElevenLabs account
If you already run a voice in ElevenLabs, connect your account and pick it. Speech for that avatar runs on your ElevenLabs credits.
Connect the account
- Open Settings, scroll to Connected Accounts, and next to ElevenLabs click Connect. (The import wizard’s Use my ElevenLabs voice panel has the same form.)
- In ElevenLabs, click Create API Key and name it.
- Give the key these permissions: enable Text to Speech and Speech to Speech, set Voices to Read, and set User to Access.
- Copy the key (it starts with sk_) and paste it in the box. Press Enter or click the connect button.
If you see “That key didn’t verify. Check it and try again.”, the key lost a character in the paste, or it is missing one of the permissions. Create a new key with the four permissions above and paste it again.
Pick the voice
- On the Voice step, choose Use my ElevenLabs voice.
- Search with Search your voices and click the row. Each row has a play button to preview it.
- Save the avatar.
If the list says “No voices in this ElevenLabs account yet. Create one at elevenlabs.io, or design a new voice here.”, the connected account has no voices. Create one there, or switch to ✦ Design a new voice.
Reconnect or disconnect
In Settings, the ElevenLabs row shows Connected with your account label, or Not connected. If a stored key stops working, the row offers Reconnect: paste a fresh key. Disconnect removes the key; the confirmation spells out what that costs: “Avatars using these voices will need a reconnect before their next video.”
Warning: Canceling your subscription releases the voices designed in AvatarFactory, and they cannot be recovered. If you plan to come back, pause instead. See Cancel your subscription.
